Let me follow you on your wildest adventure, capturing something truly intimate and true to you both.

I'd love to share with you a bit of my advice on eloping in Australia in 2020. Eloping in Australia is a bit of a new thing so you might be wondering where to start with planning your elopement. You've might have been inspired by some pretty crazy elopements in Iceland or somewhere else crazy that always manage to do the rounds on instagram. Your elopement doesn't have to look like anything you've ever seen before.

Whats actually legally required to have an elopement in Australia?

In Australia you can't technically "elope" in the oldest sense of the word, "to run away and get married." It needs a little bit of planning and forethought. You'll need a minimum of 1 month's notice to legally marry in Australia. Of course you could have your own commitment ceremony on a whim and fulfil the legal requirements with a registry marriage when you get back from your little runaway.

To get married in Australia, here are the legal boxes you'll need to tick:
* not be married.

* not be marrying a parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, brother or sister.

* be at least 18 years old, unless a court has approved a marriage where 1 person is 16-18 years old.

* understand what marriage means and freely agree to marry.

* use specific words during the ceremony.

* give a notice of intended marriage form to an authorised marriage celebrant at least 1 month and no more than 18 months before your wedding.

* be married by an authorised marriage celebrant.

“Australia has no residency requirements for marriage. Foreigners can marry as soon as they arrive providing they are free to do so. Before getting married both partners have to sign a declaration stating that there is no legal impediment to the marriage.

Civil and religious marriages are both legally binding in Australia and can take place in any location. Australian marriages are widely recognised by other countries. If in doubt about the legality in a particular country, check with the relevant embassy or consulate.

Some European countries require an Apostille Stamp on the marriage certificate to authenticate it.” – Anglo Info.com

All that to say there's not a huge amount of legal hoops to jump through to legally get married in Australia. Whether you're a local or you're here just for your elopement it's fairly simple to fulfil the legal requirements to be married in Australia.

Planning Your Elopement

Pick your location; something sentimental, maybe a location destination or even just an epic location works the treat!

Book an amazing airbnb!! For your stay or even hold the Ceremony there.

Plan the ceremony. With a lot of the formalities missing with an elopement, your ceremony becomes even more special. You may choose to just do the legals then speak your vows to each other on top of a mountain top. There is so many different way to conduct a ceremony for elopements. Picking s good celebrant that can help you decide what is important to you is huge. Take your time choosing as they will play a huge role in your day.

Pick An incredible photographer! (I know a great one if you are struggling for ideas) It goes without saying, if you aren’t having a bunch of people around with a small guest life you want to make sure you have a photographer that had the right energy. You want someone you can relax and feel comfortable with.

Plan your timeline. When & where are you getting ready, together or separate. Think about your photographer arrival. Think about ceremony, sunset time and photo locations

Top elopement tips

You have so much flexibility with your day but make sure to plan your ceremony in nice light. Late afternoon is best, unless overcast. You want the sun to be setting behind you ceremony location, perfect would be hitting the celebrant head if they are standing in between you.

If your ceremony is easier, lots of side or tall trees will do the trick. We don’t want you squinting whist saying your vows.

Think about food! A personal chef at your airbnb to cook you up a romantic feast maybe?

I would highly recommend planning an afterparty with friend and family who couldn’t make it to your elopement. Plus you get to wear your outfits again and drag out the celebration!

Where to Elope

Adelaide is a beautiful city and is touted as one of the most liveable cities in the world. It is busting with culture. A great arts community, some of the best wine regions in the country and award-winning restaurants, bars and facilities. Therefore it is also a beautiful place to have an elopement or small wedding.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Second Valley

Lake Eyre - Depending on the weather this beautiful lake can be full of water & wildlife or a huge dry salt flat with nothing but white for as far as the eye can see.

Lake McConnell, Eyre Peninsula - Pink Lakes get you excited? Me too. This stunning natural wonder has been on my list to photograph for such a long time so someone please elope here and bring me along. I think I’d spend most of the time squealing with delight.

Flinders Ranges - Located further south, accessed by a sea ferry from Cape Jervis or by plane from Adelaide, is Kangaroo Island. It has pristine beaches, native bushlands, and an abundance of wildlife. So there is plenty of adventure on the island. The landscape offers many stunning ceremony locations.
